Several years ago, in a nook in the 'NoHo' Arts District of North Hollywood, California, Tom Sullivan and Joanne Chen owned and operated a small design and manufacturing studio. Their focus was on the design and manufacture of luxury customized director chairs for the movie industry. In their quest for a lighter weight, but durable chair, they experimented with bamboo, long known for its strength vs. weight ratio. The resulting chair was not only lighter but substantially stronger than the oak they had originally used.
Intrigued with using this renewable, ecologically friendly material as well their desire to use every scrap from the manufacture of the chairs, they set out to design various house ware products using their 'engineered bamboo'. In doing so, the world's first bamboo cutting board was developed! Bamboo, they discovered, is harder than maple, making it perfect for a cutting board surface.
Shortly thereafter, Totally Bamboo was born; launching as the premiere manufacturer for bamboo house ware products; offering everything from cutting and serving boards to salad bowls to salt boxes to utensils to Hollywood chairs. This construction reduces the chance of warping in the boards, ensuring years of use. We will laser engrave your names, last name and date on the board. Da Vinci natural bamboo cutting boards are made of eco-friendly renewable natural bamboo offering a durable and attractive cutting surface for all your kitchen applications. No dyes or stains are used in this cutting board so the natural bamboo color will not fade or wash out. Please note that this board is 3/4 inch thick, whereas most other bamboo cutting boards are only 3/8” thick. There are 2 methods of cutting bamboo for manufacturing a cutting board: Horizontal cut or vertical cut. Once cut, the pieces are then pressed together to make a solid board. The boards that are made of vertically cut bamboo are much stronger and more durable than horizontally cut boards. All boards that are only 3/8” thick are made with horizontally cut bamboo, hence, they are cheaper. Horizontally cut bamboo can not be used to make thicker boards like our 3/4” thick board. The extra thick Da Vinci cutting boards are made with vertically cut bamboo making them considerably more durable than the competition. The board size is 16 x 12 inches. To care for bamboo cutting boards, do not soak them in water, do not use a dish washer. After every few uses, rub some vegetable oil or olive oil with a paper towel all over the board to make sure water does not get in to warp the board.
